1910 – City Pound Puppy Postcard “I Don’t Want to Be An Angel”

This is another card from the Bertha (and Jim) Dicus  of Alanson, Michigan collection.

The message on this card reads:

“All Well … Hope you the same.  It is muddy here looks like more rain” and it is unsigned.  The postmark is partially unreadable and is marked 1910.

This card by V. Colby was part of a series and printed in 1909.

Its a real shame that 100 years later, the City Pound is still a fixture in our society.

This card was mailed on March 3, 1911.  There is no message, and the addressee (written in pencil) is illegible.  And, the card is a mess with folds and stains.  It is marked on the back “Printed in Saxony.”  But, for all its faults, you have to love the graphics and the colors!  Happy Birthday George Washington!

May You Always Be What You Are Today …. My Valentine

February 8, 1910: Dear Cousin, Will send you a valentine card .. hope you are all well.  I am not feeling very good this week hope I will get better .. would like to see your folks … did you have your pictures taken yet, From Mary.

This is one of many postcards that I bought on eBay that were sent to Mrs. Bertha Dicus of Alanson, Michigan.  I love these old cards, the graphics, etc., but mainly I really enjoy reading many of the messages.  Some carried simple messages, funny thoughts, and humorous or sad emotions.

Aside from enjoying these old cards for different reasons, I have to wonder how did Bertha’s postcards end up on eBay?  Didn’t anyone want to keep them?  That makes me sad, too.

I finally got the walkway to the car cleared yesterday, and a huge giant thank you to my neighbors who dug out my SUV for me.   I haven’t had to venture out on the roads, and from what I hear, I don’t want to any time soon.  I still have lots of food in the house, enough dog food to make it through the week, and no overwhelming guilt on not doing laundry since the washing machine seems to be broken.  The only thing that bothers me about that is that I will have to deal with Sears to get it fixed.  Shite.

Just don’t stand below this thing, ok?

Clover checking on my progress:

Joe Kosek is a meteorologist with AccuWeather.  His presentation of the weather is unique to say the least. After the last week of crap weather in Northern Virginia/Maryland, I totally relate!  This was broadcast on AccuWeather.Com last Friday.  Turn the sound down if you have a hangover.

I have made three trips outside to shovel clean my sidewalk which is the only way to get to the vehicle.  Oh, by the way, the SUV is buried!  The HOA contracts with someone to plow the parking lot on an as needed basis.  From the look of it, the last time the lot was plowed was Saturday morning at 2:30 a.m.  I know it was exactly at 2:30 a.m. because the truck made so much noise, it got Clover started barking, and she didn’t let up for about 20 minutes.

Anyway, its 24 degrees out, the snow is not going anywhere for a while, and neither am I it appears.

Some photos from the Big Dig Out:

Note to Self: Do NOT stand anywhere near snow that can fall on your head.

This is how much I have shoveled. Go straight, Turn Right.

This is how much I have yet to shovel. Oh, yeah. My SUV is under there somewhere.

I haven’t been out to start the shoveling today, mainly because I can’t get the front door open.  Well, I could if I tried hard enough, but I really don’t want to even try at the moment.

The amount of snow in the backyard at the moment is 26 inches, and we are expecting another 6 to 10 inches!  The news stations have been covering the weather non-stop since yesterday, and I am thankful I don’t have to even think about going to work for another couple of days.

Cosmo really seems to like the snow, and he snatched two of my pot holders as he ran out the door to jump around and try and get Clover to play.  Clover, on the other hand, is one very smart dog.  She waited while Cosmo plowed through the snow and trampled it down a bit before she ventured out to try and “do her business.”

I wish they knew how to use a snow shovel.

So what if it is snowing, I KNOW the squirrels are out there somewhere!

I don’t care if its snowing … I KNOW the squirrels are out there somewhere!

Are you SURE they’re out there? Maybe they’re inside where it is warm?
