Dog Anxiety: Hers, Mine and Ours

OMG, I’ve drugged my dog!!!

She has been having anxiety attacks since last Friday. There doesn’t seem to be any reason that I can see and I cannot get her settled down. She paces, pants, trembles, either wants us to go to the basement with her or get into the car. Her EPI is under control and I continue to give her B12, both orally and injections. Low B12 can cause this, though, so she’ll be tested tomorrow. I wanted to do it today, but she has to fast at least 12 hours for the test and she had already eaten this morning. The anxiety comes out of nowhere and is lasting for several hours until she falls asleep from exhaustion. She has been trembling so much, she wakes me up shaking the bed and I hear her little teeth chattering. It’s heartbreaking.

So today, I found a few pills for anxiety that I had been given six years ago for a little rescue dog we fostered. I never had to use them. I opened the pack and gave Callie one. An hour later (after she settled down,) I decided to research the drug and found that the directions for dosage were 1/4 tablet. Now the dog the drug was prescribed for was only 10 pounds and she is 33, but still and all, that seemed like a lot. She is not too steady on her feet and her eyes look glazed. But hubby took her outside and she ran to play frisbee – I didn’t let her much, though, due to the heat.

I called the vet and he said that the dose was a little high, but she should be ok. She’ll be tired til tomorrow. I am so sorry I gave it to her. Usually I am so careful about dosages, but this anxiety of hers has become mine, too, and I acted too hastily. I can’t stop watching her to make sure she’s breathing.  Hubby insists she will be fine.

Oooh, she just got up off the floor and jumped up on the couch – no problem. But boy, is she droopy-faced.
