It’s been three weeks since we got Mr. Darcy and he has become very attached to us. He is usually never alone my wife is home with him during the day and at night I am always there. I was getting worried since I know that the dog can get separation anxiety which is a root of many problems. Well, one of those problems surfaced this week. We were gonna head out to the store and put Mr. Darcy in his exercise pen. As we were walking out the door he started barking. Well, we wanted to see how bad it was so we set up a camera to record him.
We went grocery shopping for about an hour and when we got back he was sleeping. Great! I thought. Then we watched the video. It wasn’t pretty, he howled and barked for the first 45 minutes before he eventually went to sleep. So I guess it is time to train him to sit home alone. We have been working with him by leaving for small increments then coming back. At first he couldn’t last 30 seconds after the door closed behind us. Then when we come back we kind of ignore him even though he goes nuts from being happy to see us. Usually we give him a lot of love which makes him jump, roll, and run around but I guess it’s time for some tough love. He is getting better, up to a few minutes now, but I know we still got a lot of work to do.
So now comes the first big dilemma since getting a puppy. We usually go to a Superbowl party every year but we are not sure if we can leave him alone for six hours. If he is sleeping when we leave he is usually good, but we aren’t sure what will happen when he gets up from his nap. I’m sure if he starts barking for a few hours straight some of neighbors might complain. We may end up just chillin’ at home with him this time and hopefully we can train him good enough to not be anxious when we leave.
